What's on my workbench? July 2017

Things have been a bit hectic lately so some of my more involved projects have been sidelined for a bit. Despite this I have managed to make a little progress on a few small odds and ends...

My latest obsession (as anyone who has called by the house lately will know...) has been the fertility idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

It's nearly finished now and will get its own blog entry shortly.
As always when working on a project one thing leads to another, and whilst experimenting with methods to create the hair for the idol I discovered a program called Sculptris: An incredibly intuitive and powerful piece of sculpting software, and best of all it's free! Using this I was able to create sculpted detail on geometric models like the patterns on the Saint Dionysius Reliquary from Hellboy... (model downloadable >>here<<)

and even entire organic models I'd never have considered before, like the tooth fairy from Hellboy. Thinking about it, I might have a bit of a Hellboy fixation. (Model downloadable >>here<<)

Cute little fellas.

I also put together a quick Cornish Pixie head for a bookmark I'm making,

It'll make sense in the end, trust me.

a Fremen Crysknife, (model downloadable >>here<<)

the Puckmaren from Flight of the Navigator,

I always wanted one of these.

and a model of the Skeksis Chamberlain.

MMMmmmmmMMMMmmmm

Having discovered there was fun to be had with displacement mapping I created the Heart of Tefiti from Moana (model downloadable >>here<<).

The groves are filled with glow in the dark paint.

And whilst adding a little magic to this project I discovered some incredible paint that glows like nothing I've ever seen.

So bright you can almost see the glow in daylight.

Which I then applied to the Moana stones for great effect.

I decided to see if I could combine organic and poly modelling in the recreation of the Nurachi urn from Indiana Jones

Think I'll have to change tack on this one, not happy with the results so far.

and the Hufflepuff house cup.

Which I'm a lot happier with.

As always once finished the 3D models I make will be made available through my Thingiverse page >>here<<.

Painting has taken a back seat lately however I completed a large commission a couple of months ago which I am finally able to post, and have been working on a book cover for another client.

I've also put together a few new typefaces, the most exciting of which is the Hellboy Runic Typeface downloadable >>here<< (did I mention my Hellboy fixation?)

A quick note about my long term projects:

Fawkes is still on hold. I carried out the necessary repairs to his mechanism, just need to finish feathering his head and make an appropriate base for him. I've had to put him into storage for the time being but he's not forgotten.

The structural work has been started on Vigo but again all my pigments and specialised tools have had to be put in storage too. This isn't the kind of project you can dip in and out of so I'm going to wait until I have a block of time I can throw at it.

That's it for now. Keep an eye out for the Fertility Idol blog, it should be up in the next couple of weeks.
